Summary: LOT 13511-1, -2, and -4 depict various subjects primarily at locations in New York and Pennsylvania. Cityscapes, landscapes, waterfronts, educational buildings, houses, historic sites, railroad bridges and facilities, hydraulic facilities, and people are represented. Specific sites depicted include Independence Hall, Philadelphia, Pa.; Washington's headquarters at Valley Forge, Pa.; views along the Conemaugh and Schuylkill Rivers, Pa.; Fairmount Park, Philadelphia; Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pa.; scenes along the Pennsylvania Railroad; cityscapes of Troy, N.Y.; the Harlem River, N.Y.; the Catskills, N.Y.; some views of Cumberland, Md. People, including a few members of the Amateur Photographic Exchange Club, are shown in portraits or at leisure activities (LOT 13511-4 has one photograph, dated July 4, 1861, of a woman bowling outside). LOT 13511-3 is comprised of eighteen photographs depicting industrial machines manufactured by William Sellers, & Co., and laboratory equipment housed at Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pa.

Arrangement: Organized into four subdivisions: LOT 13511-1 (stereographs produced by members of the Amateur Photographic Exchange Club); LOT 13511-2 (stereographs produced by members of the Pennsylvania Photographic Society); LOT 13511-3 (views of machines and laboratory equipment at Dickinson College); LOT 13511-4 (miscellaneous subjects).
Seventeen photographers are represented in the LOT. Those with five or more images include Samuel Fisher Corlies, Charles F. Himes, Coleman Sellers, Jame Hunter, Joseph M. Wilson, and Robert Shriver.
Original labels on the verso of many stereograph mounts specify technical information about the negatives, such as the use of wet or dry plates and the type of toning solutions used.

These stereographs were originally collected by amateur photographer and historian Charles F. Himes of Carlisle, Pa., primarily through exchanges between fellow members of the Pennsylvania Photographic Society (1860-61) and the Amateur Photographic Exchange Club (1861-63). Some images were also photographed by Himes during his affiliation with these groups.
