Summary: Cartoon shows figures representing the Past, Present, and Future looking at the Democratic donkey who is pulling a rabbit out of his hat. The Past is represented as a man in colonial garb with a copy of the Constitution for a head; the Present is shown as a despondent Uncle Sam with his arm in a sling, seated in the open door of an empty safe; the Future is a small naked child, shackled to an enormous ball labeled 'Debt.' When World War I ended, the United States was left with a large national debt and government spending continued to exceed receipts. Sykes expresses skepticism that the Democratic Wilson administration will be able to solve the problem.
