Title: Blinding light

Date Created/Published: 1918 Feb. 13 [publication date]
Summary: A man dressed in an animal skin and wearing a Prussian soldier's helmet, holds a mace which drips blood. Skulls and bones lie at his feet. Shading his eyes with his right hand, he looks towards a bright light emanating from behind a document, which paraphrases President Wilson's four essential points for peace. The word 'Today' heads the document, while a dark area labeled 'The Past,' looms behind the Prussian soldier.

President Woodrow Wilson, although anxious to negotiate a peace settlement with Germany in order to end World War I, insisted that he could agree to no accord based upon the Prussian government's autocratic aspirations. In an effort to secure a treaty based on democratic principles and the right to self-determination, he proposed to Congress on February 11, 1918, four mandatory principles to be applied in the peacemaking process.
