Title: Auburn, Natchez, Adams County, Mississippi
Creator(s): Johnston, Frances Benjamin, 1864-1952, photographer
Date Created/Published: 1938.
Notes:
Title from photographer's inventory.
Built by Dr. Stephen Duncan. House remarkable for spiral stair, vaulted hallway and triple hung windows. Fine example of antebellum home with kitchen courtyard, coach house and billiard hall. Donated to city by heirs of Dr. Duncan.
Corresponding Carnegie Survey of the Architecture of the South neg. no. 1010. Library has no record of having this neg.
Building/structure dates: ca. 1815.
Related names: City of Natchez.
From verso: Imposing is Auburn's Doorway. As imposing as it is impressive is this heavily patterned doorway to Auburn at Natchez. Much of the detail is delicate, but the entranceway seems almost a structure in its own right. Auburn dates to 1812, and was built by Judge Lyman G. Harding, first attorney general of the Mississippi Territory.
