Summary: Construction of the Arlington Memorial Bridge, views behind the Lincoln Memorial, and the Great Terrace in Meridian Hill Park, Washington, D.C. Includes views of the Memorial Bridge drawbridge while open, close-ups of bridge structural elements, and construction of the stairway and terraced grassy areas on the Potomac River bank behind the Lincoln Memorial. Also aerial view of Hains point, Fort McNair, and the Lincoln Memorial area. One photographic copy of an 1824 watercolor of the Capitol By C. Burton. Also includes photographs from Panama, showing various receptions and ceremonies, the Madden Dam project, the Panama Canal model, and various promotional subjects.

Biographical note: Joseph Cowles Mehaffey (1889-1963) was a U.S. Army engineer and governor of the Panama Canal Zone. His engineering projects included Arlington Memorial Bridge and the renovation of the White House. His papers, held in the Manuscript Division, span the years 1925-1959, number 900 items, and are accompanied by a finding aid. The photographs were transferred to the Prints and Photographs Division.
