Summary: Photographs relating to the military career of Albert James Myer, who organized the U.S. Army Signal Corps in 1861. Washington-area subjects include the 'Balloon Camp' at Gaines Mill, Virginia (May 1862); Professor T.S.C. Lowe preparing to ascend in a reconnaissance balloon (May 1862); a signal tower on Elk Mountain, overlooking Antietam battlefield; a sketch of the Signal Camp of Instruction in Georgetown; a wash drawing of a signal tower at Fort Reno, Washington, D.C.; and a photograph of meteorological instruments. Also includes photographic portraits of Myer, and a photographic copy of a painted portrait of Myer. Other subjects include the grounds of the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia and Pike's Peak summit observation station.

Biographical note: The Manuscript Division holds the Papers of Albert James Myer (1829-1880). They number 300 items, span the years 1861-1933, and are accompanied by a finding aid. Myer was an army officer and surgeon, who organized and commanded the U.S. Army Signal Corps (1856-80). His papers pertain to his army career and to the Signal Corps' contribution to Union military efforts in the Civil War.
