Inscribed in image as a description of the uniform: Red, White; Yellow; Dk. blue U.S. facings; Sash light blue; Light blue; Red; Brown; White.
Inscribed on an attached piece of cream paper in Waud's hand: Sentry at General Meades tent. The 114th Pa. Vol. a Zouave regiment from Philadelphia, was detailed as headquarters guard during the closing campaigns of the Army of the Potomac. They were a fine body of men, and had well earned the distinction, having suffered heavily in the field.
