1914,Woodrow Wilson,Uncle Sam,Clifford Berryman,cartoon
Title: The psychological professor / Berryman.
Creator(s): Berryman, Clifford Kennedy, 1869-1949, artist
Date Created/Published: [1914?]
Summary: Cartoon shows two artists, President Woodrow Wilson and a fat man labeled 'Business Interests' painting portraits of Uncle Sam. Wilson's portrait shows Uncle Sam as robust and confident. The business man's portrait shows him as frail and emaciated. Wilson protests, 'The outlines are not at all true,' while the businessman rejoins, 'It's how he looks to me.' In the winter of 1913/14, the country began to experience an economic depression, exemplified by lower production, business failure, and increased unemployment. Wilson and other administration leaders tried to convince the public that their fears were unjustified. Concerns for the economy were superseded later in the year by the outbreak of World War I in Europe.
