Title: Another Tammany job - Mr. Hopper who in 'looking after the people's safety' wishes to rob the property owners of elevators out of eleven millions / Davenport.
Creator(s): Davenport, Homer, 1867-1912, artist
Date Created/Published: [1905]
Summary: Illustration shows a man wearing glasses standing with his hands clasped behind his back. A rolled up sheet of paper labeled 'The Pratt Safety Device Swindle' lies at his feet. Behind him, two men and the Tammany Tiger hide behind large bags of money labeled 'The Eleven Millions They Intend to Make.' In 1905, the New York City government was controlled by the Democratic Party and its political machine known as Tammany Hall. In January, Superintendent of Buildings Isaac A. Hopper issued an order requiring that a special type of safety clutch manufactured by the Pratt Elevator Safety Company be installed on all New York City elevators. The order would have produced a huge windfall for the company. Homer Davenport was chief cartoonist for William Randolph Hearst's New York Journal. In 1905, Hearst, a maverick Democrat, was running for mayor and attacking Tammany Hall.
