According to Sloan's wife, via Elizabeth H. Hawkes of the Delaware Art Museum, the drawing was part of his estate. She remembered seeing several versions of it and speculated that it might be a caricature of the way he dressed for a costume party that summer in Gloucester, Massachusetts. According to an old gallery label, this is a self-portrait of the artist.
